Preparing for surgery:
What to pack

For the day of your surgery bring only what you will need in the first 24 hours (toothbrush and tooth paste, glasses, dentures). Arrange for someone to bring the following items the day after surgery:

  • Non-skid slippers or comfortable shoes that slip onto your feet.
  • Personal care items.
  • List of current medications and allergies.
  • List of phone numbers for family members and friends.
  • A copy of your advance directive/power of attorney for health care for health care decisions.
  • Reading material or something to occupy your awake time in bed.
  • Walker (only if you already have one).

Do not bring:

  • Tight-fitting clothing.
  • Shoes that need to be tied.
  • Jewelry or valuables. Please leave wedding rings at home.
  • Your own medication.
  • Excessive clothing, shoes or food.

Note: If you are planning on staying in a rehabilitation center, pack some extra loose-fitting clothes (baggy sweatpants, shorts, or pajamas allow therapists and nurses to get to your knee) and anything else that will make your stay more comfortable. If you want the center to do your laundry, label all belongings with your name prior to your surgery.
